Audry Whooley Obituary

A Funeral Service for Audry L. (Hayes) Whooley will be celebrated on Monday December 23, 2019 at 11 am in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, Watertown.

Audry Lou (Hayes) Whooley, born to Verner and Matilda Hayes of Saginaw, Michigan on February 22, 1930, was the third of nine siblings. As a child of the Great Depression, she was a hard worker from a very young age, roofing house and barns alongside her Dad and caring for migrant babies whose parents worked in the local fields.  Top help support her family, Audry left high school after completing the ninth grade but continued her education in the school of life!  She picked cotton in Texas, waitressed in Duncan, Oklahoma and later met her first husband, Oscar Khederian, when she returned to Michigan, where he played baseball for the Saginaw Bears.  There, she became a baseball bride and acquired a love of the game that lasted a lifetime.  Her marriage brought Audry to Watertown, Massachusetts where she raised her four children, Patty, Vern, Beth, and Steve.

She was the neighborhood nurse, hair stylist, and all around “go-to” Mom.  There was nothing she wasn’t willing to do to help others, and her talents included, but were not limited to, removing splinters and stitches, wallpapering, painting, building rock walls, and single-handedly chopping down trees.  Then in 1965, she put on her waitress apron and didn’t take it off for another 40 years.  Nobody ran the floor like she did!

Audry married the love of her life, Sgt. John J. “Sonny” Whooley of the Watertown Police Department, in September of 1985, with whom she shared 11 wonderful years of marriage before he passed away in 1996.  Never one to sit still, she became the resident seamstress to over 100 customers at Linden Ponds when she moved to Hingham upon her retirement.

Audry was the most extraordinary of Mothers, as well as a loving Nana to eleven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who adored her.  She loved helping others, dancing, cuddling babies (anyone’s!) gardening, tending her roses, crocheting, sewing, baking, playing poker & Black Jack, and cheering on her beloved Red Sox and Patriots.  Our Mom was fiercely independent, spirited, and fearless, and we are forever grateful for the example of her life.  She was, quite simply, our hero.

She was the beloved wife of the late John J. “Sonny” Whooley (Retired WPD).  Devoted mother of Patricia Fritz & her husband Craig of Scituate, Verner Khederian & his wife Kathie of Plymouth, Audry Wentworth & her husband Kevin of Bridgewater and Stephen Khederian & his wife Laura of Rochester, NY. Loving grandmother of Nathan, Brie, Emily, Alyssa, Andrew, Michael, Aubrey, Jimmy, Hannah, Annie & Nora. Also loved by 12 great grandchildren. Dear sister of Lola Aguilar of Reese, MI.

A visitation will be held in the MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 270 Main St. Watertown on Monday December 23, from 10 am – 11 am, followed by a funeral service at 11 am. Relatives & friends kindly invited.
