Dorothy Alice McGann
February 11, 1943–April 25, 2026
Dorothy Alice McGann, age 83, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026. A lifelong Watertown resident, Dottie was the devoted daughter of Joseph “Cliff” and Marguerite “Peg” McGann.
Following her graduation from St. Patrick’s High School (1960), Dottie attended the Mount Auburn Hospital School of Nursing (1963) and dedicated her career to caring for the patients of Mount Auburn Hospital. She began her nursing vocation on the hospital’s ward C/men’s ward. Dottie was the first head nurse of the newly opened 40-bed medical unit, Central 7 (1972), and later joined the IV team where she remained until she retired. She is remembered by her nursing colleagues for being a patient advocate, professional, and compassionate.
One of six children, Dottie is survived by her sisters Marguerite, Kathleen, Martha, and Mary; she is predeceased by her brother Joseph. She was an adoring and proud aunt to five nephews, four nieces, three great-nephews, and six great-nieces.
Dottie found much joy in winter breaks at New Smyrna Beach and summers in Scituate with her family. Her home was filled with music and movies, and she always had a book nearby. An avid Boston sports fan, reminiscing about one of the many Celtics or Red Sox games she attended always brought a smile to her face. Dottie will be best remembered for her loving dedication to her sister Mary, for whom she cared for over 20 years.
Visitation will be held at MacDonald, Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 270 Main St., Watertown, on Thursday, April 29, from 10:15–11:30 a.m. A funeral mass at St. Patrick’s Church at 12:00 p.m. will follow. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Interment will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the charities Dottie supported: The Jimmy Fund, Covenant House, and Feed the Children.
