In later years she worked the full day on Election Day and eventually became Precinct Warden.
She became involved in the programs of Charlesgate Manor Convalescent Home in the late 1970s, when her mother was a patient there. She and her husband continued as volunteers at Charlesgate through the 1980s and 1990s. They were honored for public service by Attorney General Scott Harshbarger in 1994, by the Watertown Rotary Club in 2000, and by Gov. Jane Swift in 2001, on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary.
She was predeceased by her brother Henry B. Perley and his wife Barbara of Boxford, Mass.; her brother Albert Perley of Georgetown, Mass.; and her grandson LTJG David R. Metcalf, U.S. Navy.
