Obituary

Mrs. Joanne (Joan Palmer) Tousignant, 91, died peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022. Blessedly, family was by her side.

Joanne was born in Belmont on March 2, 1931 to Byron and Edna Palmer. She was raised in a loving and musical family, the 3rd of 4 children and graduated from Belmont High School in 1949. With her school friends, she shared many trips and “good clean fun”. She worked at the John Hancock in Boston for a few years, making new friends and sharing many fun times. On a vacation with a good friend to Falmouth, MA in 1952, she met Larry. They were married on April 16, 1955 at St. Luke’s Church in Belmont. They had 2 children whom they cherished and raised in Holliston, Pittsfield and South Hadley, MA. They enjoyed 22 happy years together with family, relatives and good friends until Larry’s sudden death in 1977. Joanne, with much inner strength and love, continued to raise her two teenagers on her own.

Joanne loved dancing, traveling, nature, family pets, music and art. She enjoyed many exciting trips with family and friends: Hawaii, California, England, Italy, France, Kiawah, Florida and Ireland. She thoroughly enjoyed her years as a docent at the Springfield Art Museum. She was a member of the Red Hatters for many years, both the Red Hat Damsels in Pittsfield and the Sweet Magnolias in Charleston.

She was happiest when spending time with family and close friends who were like family to her. When her family grew to include her three beautiful granddaughters, her joy was complete. She especially loved watching the girls grow and mature into special young women.

Besides her beloved husband, Larry and her parents, she is reunited in Heaven with her brothers, Howard and Buddy (Warren) and many dear relatives and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan and granddaughter Alyssa of Avon, CT and her son, Robert, daughter-in-law Laurie and granddaughters, Charlotte and Lizzie of Stow, MA and her dear sister Claire of Simsbury, CT along with many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.

Family and friends will honor Joanne on Tuesday, April 26 with a 10:15 AM visitation at St. Luke’s Church 132 Lexington St. Belmont followed by a 11 AM Funeral Mass and burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association or a charity of one’s choice.
