A visitation will take place on Monday, December 4, 2023, to celebrate the life of Kevin Leo Courtney of Auburndale. Kevin passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 26. Kevin was a loving widower, Dad, Pop, law practitioner, community member, and friend to those who knew him, with a quick laugh that drew people together and made him many friends.
Born in West Roxbury in 1954, Kevin was a member of a family with four siblings, meeting his life-long sweetheart Ginny at the age of 13. The couple dated through high school, married before graduation, and had their first two children Kimberley M. and Jared R. while supporting each other through college and graduate school. Kevin began to practice law in the 1980’s, helping the young family move out of Boston housing projects into a then-modest home in the suburbs. Advancing in their careers, Kevin and Ginny found passion in child advocacy in middle age, leading to the welcoming of adopted children Sebastian J., Lucas E., Lee E., and Polina C. Courtney. They celebrated the marriage of Jared to Maureen of Yarmouth, ME in 2004, and Sebastian to Autumn of Agawam, MA in 2016.
The couple’s generosity and love helped create many incredibly close relationships with Ginny’s siblings and the many professional, medical, and neighborhood members who surrounded them. When the family was struck by tragedy with the sudden death of Kimberley in 2007, Kevin and Ginny drew strength from the many human assets they had developed over the years, becoming even greater advocates for those less fortunate. The untimely passing of Ginny to a brief but intense bout of cancer emotionally wounded Kevin, but revealed his efficacy and grace as a caretaker to Lucas, Lee, Polina, and his grandchildren Fitz, Pierce, Lloyd, John, and Ginny. Again, Kevin found solace in friendships old and new, acting as a social coordinator of sorts to his friend groups, and enjoying frequent “pit nights” with his outdoor firepit. Friends and family could expect to find Kevin lively and gregarious, often pruning his garden as a newly-certified Master Gardener, always wearing his characteristically eccentric button-down polo shirts.
A visitation will be held in the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 270 Main St. Watertown on Monday December 4, 2023, from 3 to 6 PM. Relatives and friends kindly invited to attend. A graveside service will take place on 12:30 PM on Tuesday Dec. 5 at St. Joseph Cemetery, 990 Lagrange St. West Roxbury.
