Kevin J. Lessard of Hingham, formerly of Brighton and Watertown, passed away on August 28, 2023, at the age of 78. Beloved husband of Cynthia (Ludwig) Lessard. Devoted and loving father of Kevin J. Lessard, Jr. of Watertown; Christian Lessard of Watertown and his former wife Jacqueline and their sons Ryan and Matthew of East Moriches, NY; Megan Hartwell and her husband Jeffrey and their sons Jack and Brendan of Cohasset, MA; Kerry Lessard Hanks and her wife Kristi of Houston, TX. Loving brother of Paul G. Lessard and Judith of Manchester, NH and Maureen Lessard and her partner Paul Christo of Brighton, MA. Son of the late Ludger and Margaret “Peg” (Manning) Lessard. Also survived by several relatives, nieces and nephews and close friends.
Kevin began his educational journey at St. Columbkille’s School in Brighton, MA. He graduated from Boston State College and received advanced degrees from Boston College and Boston University. Kevin also received an Honorary Doctorate from the Dominican college in NY for his work in the field of deaf/blindness.
Kevin worked at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown for 38 years, where he began as a mobility instructor and finished as the Director of the school. While Kevin was director, the school received a grant from the Conrad Hilton Foundation. With this grant, Kevin helped to develop and run The Hilton-Perkins Program, which was the first large-scale effort to educate deaf/blind children, teach parent advocacy and develop teacher training programs in the United States and in developing nations.
Kevin traveled all over the world to help deaf/blind children over the course of his career. He was a pioneer in his field and was dedicated to all of his staff and students.
Kevin will be remembered for being kind and compassionate and will be missed for his dry sense of humor.
To quote a wonderful song by Dan Fogelberg:
The Leader of the Band is tired and his eyes are growing old;
His blood runs through us and his song is in our soul;
Our lives have been a poor attempt to imitate the man, we are just the living legacies to the leader of the band.
A funeral service will be held in the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home 270 Main St. Watertown on Wednesday September 6, 2023, at 11 AM followed by an interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Brighton. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Tuesday 4- 7 PM in the funeral home.
