Richard P. “Fitzy” Fitzgerald, a beloved member of his family and community, passed away on November 24, 2025 at the age of 87.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2025 at 11:30 AM at the MacDonald Rockwell & MacDonald Funeral Home, 270 Main Street, Watertown. Visiting hours will take place the same day from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Born in Cambridge, Fitzy was the devoted son of Dorothy (Coyle) Fitzgerald. He worked for many years in the mail services at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
Fitzy proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was also an active member of several community organizations, including American Legion Post 259 of Tewksbury, the Lafayette Club of Lowell, and the Knickerbocker Club of Lowell.
A devoted follower of the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots, Fitzy found joy in every season—celebrating championships, enduring heartbreaks, and sharing countless memories with family and friends over the years. His compassion extended far beyond the stands; he was a dedicated supporter of the Jimmy Fund, giving generously to help advance cancer research and support families in need.
He was the loving brother of the late Mary-Jane Rei and Robert Fitzgerald, and he leaves behind his cherished niece and nephews—Chris, Karyn, and John Rei, his sister-in-law Barbara Fitzgerald who all held a special place in his heart.
His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff of Dexter House Nursing Home, whose compassion, patience, and unwavering care brought comfort and dignity to our loved one throughout their stay. We are also profoundly grateful to Care Dimensions Hospice Care for their gentle support, guidance, and kindness during the final stages of life. Their combined care made an immeasurable difference, and we remain forever thankful for the compassion they showed our family during such a difficult time.
