I have just read of Nick’s passing away. I am very sorry and post my condolences to his family. We met as students at CERN, Geneva (CH) during a 2 month summer course (July-August 1964) in particle physics. We spent a very agreable time there. As I was going on to Greece after that, in my car, Nik joined me and we had a nice trip across Yougoslavia arriving in Athens three days later. Our routes have split since then, each one of us choosing a different topic and consequent career but I remember well his so pleasantly « cool » character. I was hoping to come in contact with him but, alas, it was to discover that he was no longer with us. RIP. George Cozzika (Κότσικας)

I have only just heard the very sad news of Nik Kollias’s death now, four years later. I cannot believe it. I knew him well and was always extraordinarily impressed by his exceptional knowledge of photobiology, his good humour, his ever-present smile, and above all his all-round friendliness. May he be long remembered, and now in peace.

I've just found this obituary for Nik. We worked together in Kuwait from 1977 to 81. As others have said, Nik was a kind and friendly man, a treasured ex colleague. He was great fun to be around and I am very saddened by the news. My condolences to Marie-Jo and the children, who I, of course, still think of as young people.

I was so saddened to learn of Nik's passing. As a colleague of Nik's at Wellman Center, I worked with him on several projects. His keen mind and ready smile made collaboration a joy. He was a special man and will be missed terribly.

It is a very difficult time to learn the loss of "Uncle Nik". I met Nik 25 years ago when he visited Vancouver. I still remember his happy face when I showed him the skin reflectance spectra from 50 repeated measurements, which was published late in my first research paper on biomedical optics and also in my PhD thesis. Nik is my best friend and mentor. I learnt so much from him on both research and life. His smiling face will be in my mind forever.

It is a difficult time to hear about the loss of "Uncle Nik". He was instrumental to many of us in answering all of our questions we had on how light interacts with the skin. He would always inspire us with his answers! His genuine smile and happiness when he would see my newborn daughters growing up will never be forgotten. Thanks Marie-Jose for sharing Nik with me, with our endless phone call chats.

This is an extremely difficult time for all of us who knew, respected, and loved “Uncle Nik”. He was one of the most important people in my life. I learned many valuable lessons about science and life from him. Amongst our research projects together, we worked with cancer patients. The compassion that Nik showed to these patients who were volunteering for our research studies taught me a lot. He was a physicist who modeled the heart and compassion of a physician.

I hope the memories of Nik's gentle soul, wit, and grace will lift everyone’s spirits. He touched many lives in countless special ways. I have become a better person for having known you, Nik.

Thanks to Nik's family for having shared him with us.

Isaac Newton said "If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants." Nik was one of those giants.

When I last spoke to Nik sometime in November he did not say goodbye at the end of our phone call, instead he said "Courage."

I consider myself fortunate to have known him.
